The things we believe are core to who we are and why we do what we do.
THE OUTDOORS IS THE BEST CLASSROOM EVER
For centuries, humans have learned skills for life in the outdoors. The outdoors provides a rich learning environment where core competencies and learning outcomes can be achieved. With design and intent, MERC experiences can support key learnings before, during and after your time with us.
“I can’t believe you managed to get them doing maths”
- Emma P, Year 5/6 teacher
Healthy Sea = Healthy We
The ocean makes up 70% of the earth’s surface. Therefore, our health is dependent on the health of the ocean. The healthier it is, the healthier we are.
Marine Education and Recreation
Education and Recreation go hand in hand. The ocean is all around us and we need to learn how to engage with it safely, we need to restore it, we need to protect it. To do this we first fall in love with it and understand it. The best way to do this is with full sensory experience, sand between the toes, sea spray in the face, salt in the hair.
Risk is important
Risk is present in different forms and different places along all of our journeys. Through challenge and exposure to risk, people develop self-efficacy and quality relationships equipping people with vital life skills.
We represent hope
Behaviour change of self and others is within the endeavour of any person. We are able to change ourselves as well as those around us with kindness, bravery, leadership and action.
Quality deserves quality
We believe that every child deserves a quality experience with MERC. This is through the means of our trained leaders who facilitate each experience. This quality is reflected in how we recruit staff and how we value MERC experiences.
